4.5-magnitude aftershock hits Bohol, Cebu

Manila, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) allayed fears of the public Tuesday afternoon against a tsunami hitting Samar, following a moderately strong aftershock in Bohol and Cebu provinces.
At 1:21 p.m. Tuesday, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake shook Bohol and Cebu provinces. It was felt strongest at Intensity 5 in parts of the two provinces.
In an advisory, Phivolcs said it did not issue a tsunami warning for Samar or for any other part of the country. No tsunami threat exists for Philippines as of 2 p.m. Tuesday, it added.
The earthquake, which was an aftershock of the powerful 7.2-magnitude tremor in Bohol last October 15, originated 31 kilometers northeast of Tagbilaran City.
Intensity 5 was felt in San Isidro in Bohol and Mandaue City in Cebu. Intensity 4 was recorded in Cebu City, while Intensity 3 was felt in Lapu-lapu City in Cebu and Calape in Bohol.
Phivolcs said a tsunami is a series of sea waves or wave trains that are generated by the sudden displacement of water, travelling at high speed as low broad waves and building to great heights as they approach shores.
It added that most tsunamis are caused by fault displacements on the sea floor and of volcanic origin, including volcanic or volcano-tectonic earthquakes, explosions, collapse or subsidence, landslides, lahars, pyroclastic flows, and debris avalanches entering bodies of water, and atmospheric waves that couple with the sea.
Tremor Felt in Davao City
In Davao City, a magnitude 3.2 tremor struck at around 11:08 a.m. yesterday, Phivolcs said.
The quake’s epicenter was traced at 7 kilometers northwest of Davao City with a depth of 17 kilometers and tectonic in origin.
Intensity II was felt in Davao City, the Phivolcs said.
No damage was reported by authorities as of press time.
